MARIBOJOC – 302 skilled Maribojocanons graduated from seven (7) short-term courses offered through the Skills Training Advocating Reliance and Self-Employment (STARS) project last Monday at the Maribojoc Cultural and Sports Center at Poblacion, Maribojoc.

The STARS project in Maribojoc completed its rounds of skills trainings in all 22 barangays of Maribojoc with 7 courses, namely: Welding – 87 graduates, Driving – 32 graduates, Cellphone Repair – 12 graduates, Massage Therapy – 52 graduates, Tour Guiding – 12 graduates, Household Service with Basic Cooking – 67 graduates and Hair Cutting, Hair Styling and Nail Technology (Cosmetology) – 52 graduates.

STARS is a collaborative project of the provincial government of Bohol through the Bohol Poverty Reduction Management Office, TESDA, DOLE and its LGU beneficiaries. STARS, conceptualized in June 2009 by the provincial government, was implemented in Maribojoc in January 2010. A project orientation was done last September 2009 to acquaint the training applicants with the project objectives and requirements.

Mayor Leoncio B. Evasco, Jr. readily accepted the challenged to be the first local government in Bohol to implement the STARS project as it relates and agrees with the on-going LGU programs on Local Regional Economic Development (LRED).

The provincial government sponsored the trainers’ honoraria and materials, while TESDA and DOLE provided technical support. LGU Maribojoc took charge of the venue, transportation, meals and accommodation of trainors, and manpower support during clustered trainings in the barangays.

The Municipal Manpower Development and Placement Office (MMDPO), headed by MMDP officer Jaime Llaguno Mabilin and duly assisted by office staff Emelyn Villapaz and Ivy Jane B. Bacareza, facilitated the implementation of the STARS project in the municipality.

Upcoming skills trainings for the 2nd quarter are Driving, Welding, Small Engine Repair, Building Wiring, TV/Radio Servicing and Plumbing. Livelihood trainings for implementation will have two modules, namely: Module A. Food Processing (meat and fish processing) and Module B. Candle making, Handmade Paper and Soap Making. # (amjvistal)
